Baccarat 101: A Beginner's Guide to the Game James Bond Plays

Ever walked past a Baccarat table and felt intimidated? You're not alone. With its air of sophistication and high-roller reputation (thanks, James Bond), Baccarat can seem like a complex game reserved for the elite.

The good news? It's one of the simplest card games you can play. In fact, if you can bet on a coin flip, you can play Baccarat.

Welcome to Baccarat 101. Let's break down the basics so you can walk up to the table with confidence.

The Goal: It’s All About 9

The objective of Baccarat is to bet on which of two hands—the Player or the Banker—will have a total closest to 9. You can also bet that the two hands will Tie.

That's it. Your job is to place your bet; the dealer handles all the rest.

Understanding Card Values

Before you bet, here’s how the cards are scored:

  • Aces are worth 1.
  • Cards 2 through 9 are worth their face value.
  • 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings are all worth 0.

To get the hand's total, you simply add the values of the cards. If the sum is a two-digit number, you drop the first digit.

Example:

  • A hand with a 7 and a 2 has a total of 9.
  • A hand with a 6 and an 8 has a total of 14, which becomes 4.
  • A hand with a King and a 5 has a total of 5.

The Three Bets You Need to Know

In Baccarat, your only decision is where to place your bet. The table has three main betting areas:

  • Player: You are betting that the Player's hand will win. A winning bet pays out 1-to-1.
  • Banker: You are betting that the Banker's hand will win. This bet has a slightly better chance of winning due to a set of rules that give the Banker an advantage. Because of this, a small commission (typically 5%) is taken from any winning Banker bets.
  • Tie: You are betting that the Player and Banker hands will end up with the same total. This is a rare occurrence, but if it happens, the payout is much higher, typically 8-to-1 or 9-to-1.

How a Hand Plays Out (Don't Worry, the Dealer Does the Work!)

Once all bets are placed, the dealer deals two cards to the Player and two cards to the Banker. The totals are calculated, and based on a set of predetermined rules (you don't need to memorize these!), a third card may be dealt to one or both hands.

The beauty of Baccarat is that you have no control over this process. The dealer will execute all the third-card rules automatically, reveal the final totals, and declare the winning hand.

All you have to do is sit back, relax, and watch the cards fall.

Quick Tips for the Table

  • The Banker bet is your best bet. It has a slightly lower house edge, making it the most statistically sound choice in the long run.
  • Avoid the Tie bet. While the payout is tempting, the odds of a tie are very low, making it a risky proposition.
  • Don't worry about the "third card rule." The dealer knows what they're doing. Your only job is to bet and enjoy the game.
