Mahjong: The Timeless Tile Game of Strategy and Skill

Mahjong is a captivating tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing dynasty, blending strategy, skill, and a touch of luck. Often played in groups of four, it has become a global phenomenon, cherished in both casual and competitive settings. Its intricate rules and vibrant tiles make it a unique and engaging pastime for players of all levels.

In strategy, it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.

Rooted in rich cultural traditions, Mahjong is more than just a game—it's a social ritual that fosters connection and mental agility. From family gatherings to professional tournaments, Mahjong continues to bring people together, offering a perfect balance of intellectual challenge and enjoyment.

Basic Rules of Mahjong

Mahjong is played with a set of 144 tiles, divided into suits (Bamboo, Dots, Characters), honor tiles (Winds, Dragons), and sometimes bonus tiles (Flowers, Seasons). The objective is to form a winning hand, typically consisting of four sets (three tiles each, either sequences or triplets) and a pair, known as a 'Mahjong.' Each player starts with 13 tiles, drawing and discarding to build their hand.

Gameplay proceeds in turns, with players drawing a tile from the wall and discarding one to maintain 13 tiles. Strategic decisions involve choosing which tiles to keep, discard, or claim from other players’ discards to form 'Pongs' (three identical tiles), 'Chows' (three consecutive tiles), or 'Kongs' (four identical tiles). The first player to complete a valid hand declares 'Mahjong' and wins, with points awarded based on hand complexity.
